Key paragraph: "There isn't a single light rail transit system in America in which fares paid by the passengers cover the cost of their own rides." Heritage cites the Minneapolis "Hiawatha" light rail line, soon to be completed with $107 million from the transportation bill. Heritage estimates that the total expense for each ride on the Hiawatha will be $19. Commuting to work will cost $8,550 a year. If the commuter is earning minimum wage, this leaves about $1,000 a year for food, shelter and clothing. Or, if the city picks up the tab, it could have leased a BMW X-5 SUV for the commuter at about the same price.

We don't want minimum-wage workers driving BMW X-5s. That's unfair. They're already poor, and now they're enemies of the environment?

Here is Hoover and Dudley. Dudley was our third foster and one of Betsy's very favorite. He is now adopted and living in Tampa. Hoover thought he was worn out with Dudley, who followed him everywhere. But this was shot on February 6 and we've had two more fosters since then. We think Hoover needs a break soon. Posted by Hello

Tsunami waves even hit Florida

OrlandoSentinel.com:: "The tsunami that ravaged countries around the Indian Ocean also hit the eastern United States, but only tide gauges noticed.

A tide gauge at Atlantic City, N.J., recorded the passage of a 'train' of waves, just less than 9 inches from crest to trough, 32 hours after the earthquake struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Dec. 26, said Alexander B. Rabinovich of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, British Columbia. A gauge at Port Canaveral recorded 13.4-inch waves 24 minutes later.

The tsunami was so powerful that it swept around the world during the next 36 hours, scientists said Thursday. The tsunami ripples would have been imperceptible to Floridians, but were discernible in the data, he said."

Official 1.0 Release of Firefox is out

I downloaded and installed the latest full release of Firefox today and it has several extensions that I really like.

1. Blogthis is back and I've installed it. Simply right click and select Blogthis to Blog a page.

2. ForecastFox takes data from weather.com and publishes it in the lower right hand column. You can decide how many days and nights to show. Simply hover the mouse over one of the data fields for more information. Really cool!

3. FoxyTunes gives you control over music players without leaving the browser. I've got ours set up to run MusicMatch Jukebox player. You still have to load Jukebox first and get it started, but then you can run its controls from withing Firefox. Heh.
